V7 laser in V1

First off I would like to say hello to everyone. I have been gone awhile, busy with work and family, and kind of lost track of the scene. Seems like there is alot to get caught up on.

I am working off memory here so I could be wrong, but if memory serves I had read that newer version PS2 lasers, V5 and up, did not work in the earlier PS2s with crapped out laser.

My brothers V1 finally stopped reading DVD after about a year. Switched his with a new on that I thought was goodand nothing. Tried azimuth and pot adjustment and could not get it to read dvd. Finally removed the chip to see if that was the problem and no difference.

So finally said F it I'll try a V7 laser and low and behold reads dvd like a champ now. So was I wrong in thinking newer lasers don't work in old PS2s or is this a one in a million?
