newbie needs help bootdisk

Howdy ppl
just got a ps2 but i don't want to put a mod chip in just yet warrenty issues is there a boot disk that works that i can download because i want to back my games up and keep the originals safe from scratches and stuff i have read the forums for this info but to no avail i have heard about that magic disk or whateva its call with the slidy cardy thingy . so i take it that with a boot disk i can't just insert the disk wait for some sort of logo press the eject and insert backup ? please help me i'm all confused . . . also i heard that with modchips u can lose some sort of compatabilities like playing original dvd's and original games is this true
