Which CD drive is good as a reader for backups!

Hi
I'm thinking about replacing me normal cd-rom with a new one..either another cd-rom or a dvd-rom. The thing is..I've had a friend told me that dvd drives arent that good at reading dc backups...my current mitsumi sucks so bad at reading cdr...so most of the time, i'm using me plextor as read and write!!
Anyway suggestions of which drive or type(cd or dvd rom) i should go for!!!
thanks
