When I got my A05....... (The day after it was released) It would rip dvd movies (pressed originals) @ 12X.... This is of course assuming that the original was in good shape..... After I burned a couple of my movies I tried ripping one of my backed up movies on the A05... It also would rip @ 12X....
This was all done using the original (first) firmware..... I had heard rumors that later drives had their dvd read speeds slowed down (by firmware) but this is the FIRST instance that I actually had someone to verify that...... So I guess its like you said" I GOT LUCKY" hehe
