I'm willing to bet with a fine like that, he was was either a hardware dealer and or doing ALOT of cards. And I'm also willing to bet DirecTV didn't win in court, the guy setteld with them.
I've been following all this the first letter was in some one mail box and he/she reported it to the DSSU Forums. And alot of times its just easier to settle with them than it is to battel it out in court. DirecTV has a bit more money to blow on lawyers than Joe Blow. From what I remember reading awhile ago, DirecTV is wanting 10g for every peace of hardware and card you have, most people settle for like $3,500. Now if I ever got a letter and was told to settle or go to court, I would tell DirecTV to kiss off and go to court and have them prove that I'm using my programmer to "steal" their signal. There are many other uses for the programmers out there than to just reprogram their cards. Hell you can lock your PC with a smart card. Whos to say I'm not using it for that? And if I did get a letter, watch how fast all my PCs, cards, programemrs, IRDs vanish to a firend's house for about 6 months. But really, if I local was nailed for that, I'm willing to bet he settled with them rather than fighting it out in court. It could easy cost him more than 100g just in lawyer fees in that kinda court case.
