Chips and xbox live

i read a couple of forums that said that xbox live would work with a chip and some that said xbox live wouldnt work with a chip so has anyone out there acctually tried this yet or is it all just a big stinking heaping pile of cow dung? please let me know and remember i dont want to hear that you heard it from a friends cousins sisters transexual friend ok thanks
