cleaning these types of lasers with alcohol is a really bad idea, they damage very easily, don't know why sony uses such crappy lasers.
you should use a cleaning disc to clean the lasers, I got mine for like 10 dollars. as far as adjusting the laser goes, anybody can do it you just have to be patient and you should take note of the how it originally is so if you can't get it working you can leave it the way it was at least. tell me something does the machine do what you describe for both CD and DVD based games? how does it handle DVD movies and PSX games.
