Odd that a crack would trigger it.
Latest Direct X installed? Latest sound drivers installed? Try different sound settings in the NWN config? Try different sound settings in-game? Sounds have been an issue for people at the bioware forum. While not the same as your prob, you might mess around with they have been. http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewforum.html?forum=49
