how to make dvd to avi?

ok guys i know this question may have been asked..but i need some help i am looking to back up some of my dvd but i don't have a dvdr so i've been putting thme on svcd..so my question is what is the best way to make dvd to avi? ive tried that program but i only get about 35 min done and them it stops..i know how to make svcd but can't get anything to go from dvd to avi(divx,xvid) any help would be great
