Use the original game.dat and a cracked generals.exe. With this you can play online.
But with this combination you get problems in singleplayer because you only can load a saved game. Starting a new campain etc. will not work. So you have to install a cracked game.dat for playing singleplayer. If you want to play online or on LAN again you have to copy the original game. dat back to your gamedirectory. And you need a working serial. But if you own a legal copy, this should be no problem.
