Video Capture and DVD Burn

Looking to copy home movies and Video input to DVD. I do have DVD burner.

Two questions:

1) are all video input devises basicly the same - or are some better than others. I have a cheep old camera that accepts video input but thinking of upgrading to one of thoe belkin USB devises that accept video and s-video.

2) What's the best format's to use to capture video input - and a good piece of software to use? I've been playing around with virtualdub but it seems to capture to .avi.
