Could be because Audio CD's r relatively easy to read and have good reflectivity compared to other cd's.
Try as headly said getting an official Sony dvd head cleaner disc and give that a whirl. Failing that could be a blown laser. They r very static sensitive and if u been stripping it and cleaning it could have blown it. Good luck!!!! ps2 Controllers not working definitely sounds like a case of ribbon cable not in properly ( as headly said).
