i have the sony dru-500a and it writes to both dvd-r and dvd+r at 4x.
i use ritek, tdk, and verbatim dvd-r. for dvd+r i use tdk, and imation. they work great. get the sony drive and you wont have to worry about media formats. you can have the best of both worlds.
