I would go with the Pioneer, because customers like myself always walk away happy. You don't need a dvd rom, but it would help. This will greatly increase your reading time over using the burner to read, and would also cause less stress on your burner by saving the rip task for the dvd rom. There is region free firmware available for Pioneer drives, so multi region dvds aren't a problem. Depending on how you are going to burn your dvd, there are several very easy ways to remove dvd protection, so no worries here. Hope this helps.
