PlayStation 3 Bids to Become Home Entertainment Server
M2 Communications

Sony has effectively announced its bid to occupy the centre of next generation home entertainment networks by revealing that it has patented 'cell microprocessor' technology, moving it closer to creating a viable home server.

Sony's PlayStation 3, due to be released in two years, will feature the cell microprocessor chip, predicted to be able to process a trillion math operations per second - the equivalent of 100 Intel Pentium 4 chips.

The basic chip design organises small groups of microprocessors to work together and is envisaged as a modular, all purpose technology, able to be scaled-up or down and thus applied to a range of devices, from handheld digital assistant to large corporate servers.

With all this processing power located in a single PlayStation 3 console (1000 times more powerful than a PlayStation 2), Sony envisages the device going well beyond video gaming and handling a number of other tasks simultaneously - from recording TV programmes to surfing the internet.
