This is a friend's ps2 and i suspect the unit needs cleaning.

Before installing the mod chip, the installer noticed it was really dusty and wouldn't even play movies on Dvd-r. Cleaning it out helped.

I think I know the answer to my post is having the owner clean the unit, I was just looking for some confirmation to that
