help! please

ok i would like to back up all my dvds incase anything happens however i know that i need to buy a dvdwriter in order to do this and dvdrs however ive heard there is someway you can copy dvds 1 on 1 using your normal cd writer but ive heard of all different ways of doing this but most of those ways only convert them to vcd. So basically i would like to know how to copy my dvds 1 on 1 using my cd writer if theres anyway and what software i need cause im getting confused. Cause if theres not i just wanna know so i can get on with it. Someone please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
