Magic 3 weird prob

I had a version 2 USA ps2 with a neo2.2 modchip. I have backed up a few games on cd-r (memorex) well I decided its time to upgrade to a fancier chip (magic 3) I bought couple of them and sold my version 2 Ps2 and got a Version 4. Installed the magic 3 it plays original dvd games flawless, dvd-rs flawless, dvd movies great. Now when I try to play my cd-r ps2 copies I get the damn red screen (only have about 2 games out 20 or so work ok and all these cd-r copies worked fine on my version 2 with neo2.2) well i then make new backups with my asus burner (same memorex cdr) and now about all boot up ok except for a couple? Would this be a laser issue? Or just a freaky thing? Any opinions appreciated!
