I can't say whether it was just audio cd's or cdroms too as I haven't tried with a cdrom disc.
I think I know what it was though. I had Windows Media player 9 (beta version) installed, and, come to think of it, I never had any trouble until I installed it. A friend of mine has the same problems and he has the beta version installed too. I got rid of Windows Media player and installed Winamp and it seems to have fixed the problem.
