How EXACTLY are you trying to boot cd based games (Originals and backups)???
SEE my post on booting procedures and see if any of the mentioned procedures will work for you.. Mod Chip booting procedures....  Let me know what you come up with..... Something sounds really strange.... Usually when the PS2 has trouble reading discs its DVD discs that seem to go first....
