Forgot to mention it's true what you said about not supporting the Sub channel Data..Besides A04 should be used for DVD-R Burning anyway...Use CDR drive for CD's and DVDR Drive for DVD's.
If you really want to record VHS to DVD-R get yourself a Panasonic DMR E20. This Baby works like a VCR. Record your shows on DVD-R's and watch it on almost all DVD players..Good stuff..I sure enjoy mine.. But the price is somewhat stiff..It depends on how much is a lot to you..I got mine for $600.00. Now you can get it for about $500 to $550.00..
