how to tell what ver. of ps2 i have

first one is SCPH-30001 date code 1A -U162xxxx
second one is SCPH-30001 date code 1A-U307XXXX
please advise which version's i've got
also is there a reason messiah2 is better than magic3
new to the ps2 but was an old pro on ps1's
done my own chip programming and fitting
but been sitting back and waiting on a chip for the ps2
that did all and was'nt complicated to use it
i,e, dont need gameshark or patching games and so on
I do not have a dvd-burner yet need advise there too
and what software works best for the dvd version
and the cd format i tried cdrwin for a cd format ps2 and no luck
getting it to work
please advise on above
