Ricoh MP 7040a Burner Problem

One of the strangest things I have ever seen! My burner has worked perfectly, although very slowly for nearly 2 years, then for some reason I started to get a lot of Buffer Underruns. OK I know what they are, and how to avoid them. So, I do everything, slow the speed down, burn from images rather than on the fly, etc.

But here is the wacky part, while watching my machine copy the cache was hovering between 3 and 7% in Disk Juggler (talk about living on the edge), but! if the monitor was turned off after 15 mins by the power management, I would get an almost instant Buffer underrun. AND! if I played with the mouse, that is swirled it around and around, the cache would sometimes gradually, and sometimes rapidly start to fill, ensuring no buffer underruns....?????

Can ANYONE give me a clue as why this would have an effect??

And a solution???? Many thanks.....

and just an add on, I can copy on the fly without any problems, though only tried at 1x so far, so it must be something to do with hard drive, or cabling?????
