burning full 80 minutes cd's

hi...
I'm having trouble recording 80 minutes cd's on my (old) HP 8100i.
I've recorded lots of cd's and never had a problem before but now I can't seem to record 80 minutes cd's with over about 78 minutes. below that and other cd's it works great (including 74 minutes cd's completely full). The CDR writes (or rather appears to write) and then it confirmes the op or hangs the computer. The cd is untouched (it can be recorded again!!!).
It's rather weird as all other copies are perfect, but cd's with 77, 78 minutes or over I can't record...

Is it time to get a new one?
