Vertical Hold Problem - and a question

Hello All,

This is my first post. After browsing quite a bit through the forum, I've been unable to resolve my problem.

First, I know you like to see the specs of the CD Writer I'm using:

HP CD Writer + 9100

and I'm currently writing to Memorex Black CD-R.

I've made backups of a lot of my games before, so I wouldn't say I'm a newbie, more like an intermediate burner.

The Problems:

1) When trying to back-up Harry Potter for the PS1, I get a vertical roll on the burned copy. I found a "license" patch, and integrated it using ppf-o-matic with the image copied using CDRWIN. No luck, but I have a nice new coaster for my beer.

2) When trying to back-up Spiderman (1) for the PS1, I can't even get the image to copy to my HD. I downloaded the latest ClonyXL, but it was in German (despite the English label), so I downloaded an older version. Using ClonyXL, I scanned the Spiderman disc and it appeared to discover the problem. I pressed "copy" and it opened my copy of CloneCD and attempted once again to copy the image to my HD. Once again, I got the error of "unreadable data" in a sector.

I'd really like to back these games up, so any help given would be greatly appreciated.

can an hp actually do subchannel data? i thought ps1 games required a 16 bit subchannel data capable writer

Well, it most certainly CAN burn PSX games, as I've backed up quite a few to date including THPS3, Spyro, etc.

However, I don't know a heck of a lot about sub-channel data (hence my "intermediate" status...

I'm not an expert of PS or PS2 games - but I believe that not all the games have the PSX/Libscript protection thus for some games subs aren't needed - and this may be why you could back up the previous games - though I may be wrong.

Your best to post this in the Playstation forums.

well,i use my ricoh and had no problems with ps1 games,you see they are all in cd format (not like ps2)and they are easy to burn...but there are some new games that can detect if you are having a modchip but they can also detect if you try to copy the game....maybe that's why you can't get an image but it may just be a problem of your writer(capabilities)...

Success!

I spent a lot more time researching the forums, and finally was able to successfully back up both Spiderman and Harry Potter.

I used the ClonyXL and CloneCD combo for both.

Spiderman:
I burned in the trainer patch (along with NTSC to PAL) for Spiderman. Thus, when the trainer screen comes up first (the screen was rolling), I had to push R1 or R2 to stop the roll. Then I was able to adjust any cheats I wanted. From there, you must push "O" not "X" or else the game will start rolling again.

Harry Potter:
Definately the issue was the NTSC/PAL as my television is unable to handle one of those modes. If you have problems with Vertical Hold or rolling screen on the Y-axis, use PPF-O-Matic application to burn in the NTSC 2 PAL patch (or vice-versa).

So... First use ClonyXL to scan the original game CD. Once scanned, hit cloneCD (button in upper right). This will automatically load the settings you need into CloneCD when it opens. Write the image to your hard drive (Read to Image File -- first button on left). Name the file something you will recognize, and put it on your desktop or into a folder you will remember. (this writing can take anywhere from 4 minutes to one hour)

Once the image is on your hard drive, open ppf-o-matic and load in the patch (which is downloaded from GameCopyWorld) and the image file. This is a very fast process, you will get a success window if you did it right.

Now, the image is ready to burn to your CD-R. Plop a blank in the burner, go back to ClonyXL and hit CloneCD again. This will bring CloneCD up with the proper settings. Hit the second button on the left (write from image file). It will ask you to browse for the proper image file. Once you find it, follow the Nexts until it starts burning. This process can take up to an hour as well.
