Sorry about this but....

Hi all... I hate to do this to you guys but I need to know some things...

Problem #1:
I recently purchased a LiteOn 16x10x40 cdrw that says it has burn proof technology. (It came with Nero Burning Rom software) Anyway, according to the installation instructions I was to install the cdrw as the secondary master (yes, I changed the jumper) and the original CD-ROM (an I/O Magic 52x) as the primary slave to the hard drive (yes, jumper changed here as well). Problem was that in the bios it would show both CD's as the primary slave and the secondary master but it wouldn't recognize the hard drive at all unless I disconnected the original CD-ROM from it's primary slave position. I want to have both CD drives installed so I can copy from one to the other if needed. My system is an Athlon 800 with 128 MB of RAM running Windows 98se. I have about 8 GB of space open. If it matters I also have a Voodoo 3 graphics card.

Problem #2:

I want to make back up copies of my original Windows 98 se disk, and also of The Sims, and The Sims House Party. I got it to copy from the original disk to the hard drive, then write to a cdrw disk, but then the drive wouldn't recognize the disk. Kept saying drive not ready. One thing I can tell you... Nero Burning Rom's help file is less then helpful. Anyway, I know that The Sims, etc. are copy protected. How do I go about making a back up. I know I need to download special software, but which one is the best? THANK YOU!

Solution #2:

Get a copy of Clone CD. Have a look around for it. While your at it, you may as well get Clony as well. Clony will tell you what protection is on a CD and will give you the correct settings to use in Clone CD - note this is hardware dependent, but ur Lite On should be able to handle it (but not sure about Safedisk 2 with this drive).

The Sims is Safedisk 1 so that shouldn't be a problem - but House Party might be SD2. If it is SD2, and ur Lite On can't do this, then you can download a crack from GCW or fix the exe yourself using Unsafedisk 2.

With the Win98SE disk, i'm not sure what's wrong. Make sure your using the same CD-label and maybe risk a CD-R on it aswell.

ok, Problem 1.
The manual was yanking your chain. you would be better off having your hard disc as primary master. next your cd-rom as secondary master, with your cd/rw as secondary slave. go into the bios and select auto detect your drives - that should have cured your problem there.
Number 2.
You're right about nero's manual - it's not the clearest. The reason the sims & house party wont copy is because of copy protection as you said. without the model number, im not sure if your writer will work with the best program for burning that most people have found - clone cd. Goto :####://www.elby.org/CloneCD/english/index.htm and check supported writers. If you are lucky ( i guess you probably will be ) you should be able to copy safedisc 2 protected games ( like house party etc.) with your burner. Windows disc has no protection so it's just a straight copy. Download the demo of clonecd and if you like it buy it - its well worth the money. If you need any more help mail me or whatever.

Hello, and thanks for all the info. The model number of my LiteOn is 16102B. I downloaded CloneCD, and Clony, AND while I was there I grabbed BetaBlocker and Copy Protection Detector (seemed like a good idea). ANYWAY, I used Clony and tried to copy The Sims HP with CloneCD and I had literally hundreds of read errors... I am assuming it isn't supposed to do that? So I just cancelled it. I know absolutely NOTHING about copying CD's, especially protected ones, but I learn fast if someone would just tell me step by step... or point me to a URL that does. None of the help files is basic enough for me at this point. If I can build an entire working system from scratch you'd think I could figure this out!

Eagle is on a distinguished road
Hint to # 1 :
You may have to change a jumper on your hard drive ! some hard drives (IBM i think) need an additional jumper set to enable the usage of slave devices.

Note to # 2:
Read-Errors are normal when making an image of an copy-protected cd. these errors are a part of the protection. just ignore them.

Hi Califb,
The harddrive is probably set as a single master, not dual. If u take the drive out, it should show you the setting for this on the label. Alot of newer drives, mainly Maxtor & Western Digital, use a 10 pin jumper section that configures both a single device & dual devices & u need to set this correctly. Try the manufacturers website for extra guidance.
Seeing as it is a burnproof cd writer, it would not really have made any difference if u slaved it off the original cd-rom drive.
Hope it helps.
