"Please insert CD" Messages

I recently aquired some original racing games like Destruction Derby, Rollcage, Carmageddon etc (all circa 1997). However, after i installed them, i keep getting "please inset cd" messages when i want to play them even though the original cd's are in the drive! Therfore, i have been unable to play any of the games so far! I am running Windows ME, and was wondering if this was a problem considering all the games were written when only Windows 95 was available. Has anybody had similar trouble with old games on a new OS, and is there a way around it? Do i need to change the dir paths in the registry or something? Please help me!!!!
