Playing PS2 game

It might sounds stupid, but is it really necessary to chip PS2 to play copied PS2 games?

Warlock is on a distinguished road
If you are comfortable with taking apart your PS2 and leaving it apart to play the backups then you dont need a mod-chip but before i would do this and run the risk of something getting damaged from it being left open i would install a chip or buy a neo-key....Good luck!!
