Sonic Adventure mystery

In the Mystic Ruins stage, down in the little pond area, there's something recessed into the wall, looks aztec or something. I've played through the game twice and couldn't remember it being used for any game event or cutscene (including fighting Chaos down there).

Is it just there for decoration or could you actually do something with it?
