Xbox that cant be chipped ?

Hi all. Admittedly this is not my field @ all (Xbox). Ask most things about PC's and ill know what were talking about. Anyway onto my problem. I bought a X-box (for one of my son's) about 3 years ago (2002). It was chipped in 02 and play's all backed up games.

Now i recently bought my younger son an X-box also for christmas.(it was bought 1/2/05) I took it to a guy who chipped the other X-box and left it with him for a couple of hours. When we went to collect it i was told that this perticular type of X-box can not be chipped as of yet ?. So is it true that the new modle X-box cant be chipped ? Or is it a case of him not having the right mod chip for the new X-box ?. I ask because i was under the impression "ALL" X-box's could be chipped to play backed up games. If the new X-box (ones for sale in UK shops) can not be chipped then any idea as to how long were talking here ?

All info will be greatly appreciated by myself and more importantly my 10 year old son. He hates not being able to play the "backed up" games his older brother plays on his chipped Xbox. Thanks

I have not heard of any unchippable xbox's ever. To my knowledge (and yours as it seems) they can all be chipped.
Since you bought it so recently it will most likely be a 1.6 or 1.6b xbox and those can be chipped too. They will need a LPC rebuild though, maybe your chipper can't handle that? Also the 1.6 xbox needs a special bios thats made for 1.6.
If you want to do the job yourself there are solderless solutions that are real easy and won't take long at all. Take a look at Xenium S.P.ICE and you will find it real easy. The first time ever I chipped a xbox was with the regular Xenium ICE and on a 1.4 and it took me total 1 hour to set iy up completely with EvoX and all stuff installed.

If you can get more info from your chipper about why it is "not chippable" I can check that info up to. Most likely it is bogus that it can not be chipped.
Any general info about the xbox (more than purchase date) will be help alot too.

Thanks for that. Im going to look into this in a bit more depth as i though mabey the guy i got to chip the last X-box was probarly not up to it now. Thanks for the info thus far. Also as regards to more info on the X-box. ie what exactly ?. I have all the papers that come with a retail purchase etc but its nothing in the way as to what hardware is being used inside it. Is it true that the newer X-box's are of lesser quality (retail) as in the GPU is of lower quality ? (another thing the "Chipper" told me. Thanks

I am beginning to wonder where this chipper of yours are reading about xbox... He must be making up things on his own. The GPU of all xbox's are the same, they only differ in when produced and of course the revision of them. The basic are the same though. They are all equaly good and there are no "lower quality xbox". Why would MS even build xbox of lower quality? Thats nonsense all the way.

To get more info about the xbox it must be opened and then it is required to take a look at what chips are on the motherboard. Thats where the difference is. They have one new chip in the 1.6 and there are differences in wich memory used in the different version of the xbox's.

If you are getting into the xbox world I can strongly suggest that you start and continue your journey over at xbox-scene. They have guides for everything and the whole place is about xbox only. Once you get into the xbox for real you will discover the possibilites and what you can do by yourself real easy.
The real positive side of learning about xbox yourself is that you can config and put what you feel like on your xbox and get it running real smooth. After that it is no more only a gaming machine.

That chipper of yours doesn't sound to be so good at xbox, maybe he can do simple soldering on 1.0-1.5 xbox but more then that I doubt.

I hope I have been to some help atleast and maybe got you started.

Again thanks for the in depth info. I guess it makes sence for me to do this on my own thinking about it. (i enjoy building up PC'S so i guess the next logical step is to sort out my sons X-box instead of getting "mr chipper" to sort it. Thanks for the link. Ive had a look on their and its was down to seeing the in depth tutorials that made me decide to do this myself. My guess is that he may have just done a tsop flash? Do you have a radio shack switch or can the chip be turned off?

As most people know, 1.6's don't have tsop's. If he did that to your modded xbox, then I hope you hadn't payed too much. Takes about 5 minutes to install and a cost of 0 extra dollars, unless he had a switch put in. It could also explain why he said that "it coudn't be modded". He probably just did want to waste any expenses, even if it just costed you more.

Im unsure if i made myself clear in original post so here goes....1st Xbox he chipped no probs. There is no switch as such that im aware of though. I do remember him telling me that it could be "Flashed" in the future. 2nd XBOX and he just said out right "it cant be done" (This is a shop retail Xbox and because of that obviously no work of any kind has been done to it). I hope i have made it clear enough. So just to get it straight in my head.What he said about Xbox's that can not be chipped is poo poo right ?. Yes all xbox's can be chipped. What Quall999 was refering to was the built in BIOS on the xbox. In version 1.0-1.5 they are stored in a bios chip called TSOP but that was changed to 1.6. That TSOP could be flashed with the bios of your choice and that way no need to buy any modchip. This would of course remove the original xbox bios completely. But Quall999s theory was that the guy had flashed the TSOP and not put in any chip.

To make things extra clear:
you can chip your 1.6 xbox without problems. Do some reading and you will find out how to get, what to get and where to get what you need.
And that chipper of yours is talking poo poo yes.

No I think that they only are making fewer of them and are converting most factories into XboX2 (360 or whatever you would like to call it) producing sites.

Well i have now finaly made the decision to do it myself. (thanks to X box sceen tutorial,in depth study of the site and of course being pointed there in the 1st place. Thanks kosmiq). Now my 1st Job is to discover what is inside the Xbox i talk about. Once this is done i will be in a possition to know what path to take. ie a flash or a chip. I need to do some more homework on this to decide which chip to get etc (if TSOP is out of the question). Once i have decided on my next path of action i will no doubt be back here asking your opinions as to if ive made the correct decision regarding the chip. Thanks again ppl
