Silent Hunter 3 + Starforce question

I did ask this question on another Forum, but got no proper answer. Have you got to install the game from the original cd, or can you do it from a backup cd? I only own 1 Starforce game (Trackamania), and had so much grief that I didn't buy another SF3 game. I notice that the Silent Hunter 3 crack doesn't tell you to use ST******ER to disable the IDE channels either. Does this work in a different way from other starforce cracks then?

It does appear from reading the Nforce Forums that the protection has been beaten on this game, and functions like a normal nocd fix, without the need for disabling CD ROM channels. can anyone confirm this?

Starforce will only check your game when you run it, not when installing, so you can use a backup CD/DVD to install from then use your originals when you run the game, it will then check to see if the disc is an original.

As for Silent Hunter III, there appears to be a 'proper' crack for this so no need to disable CD/DVD Drives or use StarF*cker/SFN, just replace the files with the cracked ones and it should work!

Fantastic! Yes, I just went and bought Silent Hunter 3 from PC world, and to my amazement the fix works superbly, in a similar way to a non-Starforce fix. I even copied the DVD to the Desktop and installed from there. I wonder if it was just this game that was wasy to crack? Or maybe the crack groups put a lot of work into it, with it being such an important release. Does this mean the hackers have sussed the Starforce protection? Do you think we will get updated fixes for this game, or do you think this nocd will be a one-off for version 1.0 only?

I'm over the moon here. I vowed NEVER to buy a Starforce game again, but being able to make a backup has really cheered me up. I know I may have to resort to IDE channel blocking and Mounting tools with future Starforce games, but I no longer feel these games are 'Un-backupable', so to speak.

Crackers sorry

I wanted the game today. Here in Warrington (UK), everyone tends to price match their PC titles anyway. Only cheaper place is the Web, but with Easter upon us, I may have had to wait a few days. I wanted Brothers in Arms also, but a guy in the shop said it was overated, so I gave it a miss.

I love PC World and TINY, cause tis those machines that people bring in to be fixed :P

And why people think PC World is great for repairing etc is beyond me.

Here is a typical convo with a PC World Veteran Purchasee.

"So if I buy my PC from your shop, do I get a 5 yr warranty like I did at PC World" - Vet

"No, you get 1 yr on PC, 3yr on Monitor" - Me

"Thats crap btw, I pay a little extra at PC World and im 5yr protected, I can even accidently drop my machine in 5yr's and get a new one " - vet

"Is that so sir? Well you know PC World add on a percentage on their PC's straight away, then make you pay close to the price for their Aftercare Service? You know the machine you would get in 5yr time is the same price you paid for the aftercare service?" - me

"Huh? You what?" - vet

"Thats right sir, you were screwed" - me

"Damn, can I have that PC please then" - vet

"Sure sir, would you like to have an extended 5yr warranty with that?" - me

"Damn no need to rub it in" - vet

"Yes Sir" - me
