Starcraft/Broodwar 1.12b No/Cd Not working with Win98
There has been no mention of this yet, so I guess that I will get to be the complainer.
I'll make this quick. Jetlee's stuff - and everyone elses do not work with Win98. The reason: Win 98 uses regedit4 and all the others here use Registry editor 5 or other stuff that the tools in win98 don't recognize. For those of us with win 98, you have to modify the "registry file" that comes in the zip. 1 Use Wordpad to get the text in the registry file to come up in a readable form without all the dots and dashes. Then copy it over/into to a regular .txt file (should only require the select all followed by the copy command). Delete the part where it says regeditor 5 or the like and replace with regedit4. Save over the original file and it should work fine. ***Be sure to go through the entire file and change what is necessary to reflect your systems current settings.** 2 The next thing to do is get yourself an unproteced "storm.dll" file to make it work (overwrite the original). I was going to upload both files here (sorry), but it is 181 kb and the limit here is 8....If anyone needs it let me know and I'll try to upload it to GCW or I will drop a line to the administrators here to see what I need to do to get it on the net where everyone can get it. For those that are interested, I went ahead and mailed the zip containing the necessary files for Win98 to GCW (will probably work on other Operating Systems such as 2000/ME ETC though) The file itself was named "Starcraft 1.12B No CD(Revised for Win98)". The name might be a tad confusing as it says only Starcraft, but I have the Broodwar expansion installed and it works just fine with it as well. The instructions for use are included in the zip. Note to a couple of personal E-Mails that I have gotten: The No Cd by r4363d17 is NOT the one I mailed in. The reason you are getting the message that the two .reg files included with the zip are not working is because they were made in (what looks like) Wordpad. Win98 Regedit4 can't recognize this format. Most who have Win2000 and the like with Reg Edit 5 can .
To explain what I mean, if you open the .reg files with Notepad (NOT Wordpad) you will see text with a bunch of dots, dashes, and spaces that are used mainly for reference by Wordpad. Regedit4 cannot recognize this. Just try opening the .reg file(s) (with Notepad) to see what I mean. The text will be correct without all the extra mess only if you open the same file with Wordpad. To get things working correctly open the file(s) with Wordpad (you should see no dots or dashes. Go ahead and make any needed changes/modifications to the Drive and Directory entries now. Note:**be sure to delete the Regedit 5 text at the top and replace it with regedit4**), click the "select all" option from the edit menu and copy everything from here to a Notepad .txt file. After this you should save over the .reg file(s) with the save as command (in Notepad)....Go down to the "files of type" and click the scroll down arrow until you see the "all files" option. You should now be able to the the see the .reg file to save over and replace. Personal Recommendation/Note: Besides being in in Wordpad format, the .reg files in r4363d17s no cd zip are rather short, and it looks like they leave out a thing or two necessary to boot things up. Use the .reg file from Jetlees No cd loader zip (right below r4363d17s instead). I used the "storm.dll" from r4363d17s file and the .reg file from Jetlees file (modified of course) to get things running. Important notes to remember: Make sure you modify ALL entries in the .reg file(s) to reflect your installation paths by scrolling down through the entire file. You MUST have the "Install.exe" copied from your Starcraft/Broodwar CD to your installation directory (make sure you are using the right .exe depending on which one you are playing.) The "storm.dll" from the r4363d17 No Cd MUST be allowed to override/overwrite the original. This is a given, but i'll go ahead and put it in. If at any time you goof, or overwrite the .reg file(s) with Wordpad you will run into the "not a registry file" when you click on it again....Use Notepad to make a normal .txt file. A good way to recognize files made between the 2 is size. The Wordpad files will be much larger, roughly 130+kb (dots and dashes used by Wordpad take up a LOT of room). The Notepad file(s) will be 3kb with the exact same info. Last edited by inteck; 04-03-2005 at 12:39. Reason: Additional Info |
