Serial Port and dj3

What is the intended use of the serial port on the back of the dc? What purpose does it serve besides creating backups?

And DJ3 is giving me a TOC error on almost every *.cdi I have burned. What are the recommended settings?

It was originally built for liinking to the neogeo pocket... sega messed up in to many ways on that one...
