Why can't I backup up copyright material on a home DVD\VCR combo?

I'm trying to backup a movie (that I own) on DVD to a VHS tape but ofcoarse the DVD\VCR combo deck won't let me do it becuase its copyright material and the new decks have something that senses that the material is copyright.

Questions:

Is there a way around this?

Is it a chip inside the deck that can be removed by chance and if so how?

What would happen if I hooked up a seprate VHS deck and recorded to that, would that work?

Come out of DVD player to VHS recorder. The industry is not that dumb, their not going to make it that easy to record their stuff.
