newbie question patches

hey guys, I'm a newbie. I posted a thread about Silent Hill 3 last night. I was reading about patches for games, but what are they? Do I have to download something and reburn my game with it. Because I have a Pioneer DVR 106 burner, Ritke -R's and am using RecordNow Max and have tried to burn Silent Hill 3 many times. RecordNow Max says burning complete. I try the game out and it won't load past the first screen. Normally it says Silent Hill 3 in the bottom right corner then it checks the memory card. On my backup it won't do it. It loads Silent Hill 3 in the bottom right corner and stays that way. Does this game need a patch or does it have a special copy protection? Has anyone else had this problem. Oh I'm using the magic swap 2.0 with the slide card, Do you think I might need magic swap 3.0? And has anyone else had any problems with other games not loading past the first screen?

I think you need a REAL modchip. Swap magic's and slide cards are not reliable.
