cant copy cds with nero or roxio, clonecd is fine.

Newbie...

Last year, installed an LG DVD CD-RW combo drive in a friends old system...PIII 450 256mb ram Win98SE...all went fine.

Recently friend has had trouble burning cds.....

Did clean install of bare necessities...( cue for a song! ), ie win98se, sound card drivers, video card drivers, mobo drivers and burning software...bundled nero 5.

When ever a disc to disc copy is tried it can read the source disc but gives a communication error on the LG RW. If you try to read to image and then burn from image...reads the disc fine...but same error when try to burn.

Uninstalled nero and tried nero 6...still wont work.
Uninstalled nero and tried Roxio 6.....same problems.

If you drag some files from the hard drive and burn them..it usually works ( random data files )

Now, if I run Clonecd on the system it copies any thing you throw at it...the only problem being you cant use clone to compile audio cds.

This leads me to believe it to be a software error/conflict/missing files problem.

Is there something that nero or roxio need that clonecd doesnt?

Hope you can help from the info Ive given..if not ask away...like to clear my dining room so I can eat over christmas/new year!!!

Merry xmas and a Happy new year to you all.

p.s Have been told may be something to do with aspi....

What format is the audio files you are trying to back up?
MP3, WAV, WMA, Tracks from original CD, Audio CD direct backup, etc...

If the burner worked fine at one time, what has changed?

Do you suspect any virus activity?

If it was once good, it should still be working, unless the laser in the burner has gotten dusty/dirty. ( try cleaning )

ASPI should not be an issue if it was at one point working, unless there is something that has been overlooked when you/he re-installed the software.
