NFL2k and online issues!

I have a copied version of NFL2K1. It is the US version and i have a pal dreamcast. WHen i try to play online it connects and all and goes to the right servers but when i try and play someone it goes to the Team choice screen but then it stops and says the connection to the opponent has been lost. I have tried to play people loads of times and the same thing happens. Is it because my NFLK2K1 is copied or becasue my connection is shit?
