replacing broken game cd
I've recently binned a cracked copy of C+C Generals (cracked because of an overly stiff release button in the case). Browsing through some other posts, I've read mention of the manufacturers replacing broken cd's. Is there a charge for this in most cases? I could kick myself for not thinking of something so obvious before throwing it away.

Normally there is a charge, but it varies from developer to developer.
In your case, it seems you are out of luck. You have thrown away the evidence that you onced owned a legal copy, so.....
