You have to make a copy of the files that are going to be changed by the patch. Usually this is mentioned somewhere, or it's the game executable, like "soa.exe" for Soldiers Of Anarchy for example. To make a copy, just select the files in Windows Explorer, right click on one of them and select "Copy", then point to somewhere else and then point where you want the copy (you can even use the same directory), right click and select "Paste".

The file(s) you overwrite whenever you apply a crack are what you want to backup.

Ex. If you're cracking WC3; You download the crack, then extract it to the main folder replacing war3.exe ( I think..?) and sometimes worldeditor.exe. So, before you replace those files back them up by copying them to another folder (hold down ctrl to select multiple items for copying) or if you have win [rar], [zip], [ace] installed you can simply right click the file and click "add to archive" then "ok" and it'll be backed up.

WC3 is one of the only games I think you really need to backup the files you're replacing cuz of the crc checks the patches do.

Hope I helped.
