This is a problem with an installed mp3 codec. If you installed the Nimo codec pack, uninstall it. If you want to reinstall it and avoid problems, uncheck the "Fraunhofer MPEG-Layer 3" codec under Audio/Directshow. Then run WMFDIST.exe under the "\REDIST" directory on your game cd, it will install a better codec.

It usually is that Nimo codec pack, but there are other ways to get a bad mp3 encoder. In that case, go to your Windows directory, e.g. "C:\Windows\", then to the "System32" subdirectory under your Windows directory. Delete the "l3codecp.acm" and "l3codeca.acm" files, then install WMFDist.exe and see if it helps.

A most unusual and rare game backup issue, no doubt.
