PSX CD backups

I've got a few questions that I don't think have been covered anywhere here. First off, when one says a "successful burn" of a PSX game, that doesn't necessarily mean a playable one without a mod chip, right? I've used Nero, WinCD and CloneCD and though I burn successful copies, none of them play on my PSOne. So is the only way to make a playable copy, to patch it using PPf-o-matic? Additionally, do you have to patch the protection with the correct region type? ie: Is it possible to use a UK-PAL ppf patch on an NTSC/UC game? And is it possible to use multiple patches on one disk image? Thanks for any help. Just trying to save myself the trouble of getting the Cheat CD or modding my PS.

(why are all the protection patches on this site for PAL only?)

Look here for booting without a mod. Not sure about the patching stuff though. Been out of the psx scene for a while now. It's all about PS2 baby!

You will need a mod or a boot disk.

I have tried both Game Shark Lite and The Game Shark Code archives disc...and neither worked...the thing with the GS lite, is that when you go to 'explorer', to access the cd player option, it says that there are no audio tracks to play...and then when I go to start game, it says open the lid, and put in the game disc, but as the lid sensor is taped down, it never registers any change, and the pressing of buttons does nothing...with the GS Archive disc, I lost the GS hardware a while ago, so when that is not detected, the program just stops...frustrating.
