starting problems for ps1 backups on ps2

A friend of mine asked me to post the question if somebody knows why he cannot startup ps1 backups on his ps2 which was modded with the messiah chip?
Is there aybody who maybe knows how this is possible???

How is he trying to boot the PS1 backups?

All he should have to do is insert the game in the tray, close the tray, press reset twice (double tap quickly)...The games should boot.... Assuming the backups are ok...
