HELP ME OUT PLEASE!!!!!

i have a hp 8100 writer (2 years old), i use easycdcreator4.03+directcd3.01. when i put previous recorded "directcd's" in the writer, he recognizes and reads the cd-rw instantly. But when i put a blank cd-r in, he cant recognize or read the cd (info), i bought another brand, recognizing is better but he gives as cd-info:"blank cd-rw" when instead it's in fact a cd-r. In 10% of the cases the recognizing of the cd is correct, but it seems as it's getting worse.
I already contacted HP support, they think the laser is damaged. I don't know how this could happen, when i do manage to burn a cd-r: the quality is perfect, even databurning with directcd is perfect. I do have to say a smoke many fags in the room where the writer is placed, does this matter?
Do you think this is a software- or hardwareproblem.
How can i remove or clean tar/nicotine stains from the laser (if this is the problem)
Please give as many comments as possible, tanx.
