Backing up PS1 games

Is there a way of backing up a game and playing it without a modchip or anything else.

Generally speaking, no.

If you have an older PS, there's swap tricks and stuff that you can use, but you'd be much better off getting yourself a modchip. They aren't expensive....

Where can I get a modchip from and will it damage my Playstation (recent version)? How much will it cost and how do you wire it?
