No-solder/Neo Key Please help
I posted on this subject before and have a few more questions. I have a V4 NTSC with a Neo Key USB and a No-solder mod. I would like to give this unit to friends little boy but I am having some problems and would like to fix it first.
I am able to boot all originals fine. The Neo Key/Gameshark boot PS2 CD-R backups flawlessly. The no-solder/Gameshark booted DVD-R flawlessly for about a month. Now it only boots DVD-R 1 out of every 10-15 tries no matter whether it is lying flat or standing up. I can tell when it will boot the DVD-R because 10 seconds after my swap with DMC (which is not nicked or scratched) there is no sounds from the laser. When it doesn't boot it will start to make a ticking/spinning noise 10-15 seconds after DMC swap. If I continue, it will freeze at the "updating codes screen". I tried it with the lid off the PS2 to see what was happening and I noticed when it froze at the updating codes screen the (backup) disc would stop spinning. I don't think it's my laser as it boots CD-R with Neo Key flawlessly. The no-solder did work fine for about a month. I would really like to have it fixed so I can give it as a Christmas present. Any help is appreciated!! |

It definately sounds like your laser..... Regardless if it still boots cd-r backups, a DVD-R is harder to read than a cd-r... This is usually the beginning of the end.... First DVD-R's dont want to load, then cd-r's, then originals.....
Try cleaning the laser with a cleaning disc (the ones with the little brushes on it).... See if that will help....

Thanks BG. I was hoping it wasn't the laser. I did try to clean the laser with one of those CD's with the brushes (although it was an old disc) but to know avail. I took it apart and re seated the chip and it booted first time but not the second. I guess you are right .
![]() I just got a premodded V7 with Magic 2 chip. Is that chip as hard on the laser as the no-solder mod? Thanks. |

No its fine. The no solder wasn't what killed your laser it was your Neo Key. All chips with Neo in their name kill your laser.

I wish I was warned!! It was the first chip I had put in. If I replace the laser, will my no-solder work OK again?
Thanks. Barry Thanks to NEO Key, I just got a V7 with Magic 2 installed. Are there any warnings should know about with it?? |

Nothing wrong with magic2. I got two v5's with magic2 and both work great.
