Help the new guy.
I am trying to no-cd patch sims2 pets for convenience (buy the games, travel a lot, easier to no-cd and leave the discs @ home) but it has installed as read only. changing it in properties don't work, how do I no-cd this game? I know next to nothing bout 99% of what everyone else in here is on about, I just need a simple, moron-proof answer.

Do you mean you have you downloaded the crack from here:
http://dl.gamecopyworld.com/?d=2006&f=rld-s2pe!rar but when you try to unrar it into the game directory the 'Sims2EP4.exe' is write protected and you cannot copy over the crack? If so, right click on the 'Sims2EP4.exe' in your game directory and click the 'Properties' button, then find and untick the box that says 'Read-only' and then click the 'Apply' button and then 'OK' to remove that attribute. You should then be able to copy over the crack. |

help the new guy part 2
I tried to adjust the properties, but the read-only tick just resets itself, preventing the overwrite. I am buggered if I know how to do it. I believe that it is something in the code which is trying to make it impossible to patch, but don't have the expertise to adjust it. has anyone else hit this snag?

Make a backup of the file to a safe place on your hard drive and then try to delete the original file, then copy over the crack!

Ehhh, get a proper file manager like FAR Manager or Total Commander instead of that useless junk called Windows Explorer which hides all details of what's really going on, causing you a major pain in the ass when troubles arise...!

Total Commander is the way to go if you're trying to do ANYTHING with files under XP. Haven't tried the other but just might to see if it worth it weight.

Quote:
1. The file is running in the background 2. You have a virii that is causing all executables to be read only, to protect itself elsewhere. 3. Your logged in as a limited user in Windows XP and not administrator. |

Well... Just decrunch the no-cd, rename it and copy the renamed .exe to your sims directory and run the game via the renamed no-cd.
Should work. But nevertheless you should investigate in your problem

Try a rootkit-scanner like rootkit revealer. Beware! Only for experienced users!
