I just bought a brand new machine un-modded for use with live. Can anyone give info on how to connect using just a crossover cable. I dont have a router, etc, as i connect to the net with a USB modem. I have a NIC, which is not used. My IP address is static given by my ISP and i dont have to enter any DNS settings for my connection either, yet the xbox wants DNS settings, which i dont have. I know of the ICS that you have to do, yet i enabled that.
Do you have to enter any IP settings for the NIC like you would do to FTP to the xbox, as when i enter a given one, the xbox reconises it, yet displays DNS error. However, if i assign IP auto from the PC in the TCP/IP setting, the xbox cannot obtain an IP at all. Does this make any sense? The web site is crap and doesn't explain enough for the error messages you recieve. Thanks!!!!! |

usually you just plug the xbox into the cable modem. DNS and everything can be set to automatic.
I am not completely sure if you can route the xbox into your pc and out the usb modem. If that is what you are trying to do, then you will probably have to input all those settings into the xbox manually. Or get one of those virtual router. I am not an expert on networking though.

Finally got it working. I had to assign an IP address of 192.168.0.1 for the NIC in my PC, and then in the Dash, set the xbox IP to Auto, which then assigns the NIC IP as the gateway. I then set the DNS setting to manual and entered my DNS servers of my ISP, which i found using the "ipconfig.exe/all" in dos.
The official xbox.com site does not explain any of these proceedures at all. With very little knowledge of networking myself, these type of issues can be confusing to a lot of users, which do not know of these things. They need to update their site regards to my problem and others too, as i spent an entire day searching for anwsers, as simply you just wanna plug in and play. Sorry if i'm ranting on, yet this totally pissed me off, but i'm sorted now Peace!! |
