I thought infinity was capable of playing PAL ps2 games? I bought a ps2 game from UK (over the net) and my screen flickers and is in B&W, basically useless. I know North American TV's operate at 50Hz but I thought maybe the mod chip magically solved it - it says its compatable.

I don't have infinity but I'm suspecting there is a button somewhere that you press while it's booting or a menu on startup screen where you select pal. It should play it.

Nope, the Infinity does nothing to correct the output signal playback of PAL games on an NTSC system. You are probably getting "Region Free" mixed up with this.
Lets say you are in the US and have a un-modded PS2 and buy an import from Japan, both the US and Japan use the NTSC format, however Japan is in a different region then the US, so when you put your JAP import in your US PS2 it will fail because of the region protection. Now let’s say you take the same PS2 and put a mod chip in it then try and play your JAP import it will play as the chip will get around the region protection and since Japan uses the NTSC video standard as well the video output will display correctly. Now let take that same modded PS2 and put in a UK import. The chip will get around the region protection just like it did with the JAP import, and it will boot however since the UK uses a different video standard (PAL) the games wont display correctly on your system and give you the results you have already described. By the way all current chips get around region protection. You can make an image of the import and patch the image with a PAL to NTSC patch application or a pre-made patch then burn it back to a disc, or buy a PAL to NTSC signal converter that will actually sit between the PS2 and your TV.

Well I made the backup to HD using RecordNow, so it's a .gi (3 of them), so ADR patcher doesnt recognize .gi, at least not when I tried. So converted them the best way i know how, using UltraIso -> tools -> convert, select all .gi's and make 1 iso. Did that, patched it, fine, burned, fine, played in ps2 -nope... nothing. black screen.
![]() Also tried just an iso back up and nothing. |
