V7 laser in V1
First off I would like to say hello to everyone. I have been gone awhile, busy with work and family, and kind of lost track of the scene. Seems like there is alot to get caught up on.
I am working off memory here so I could be wrong, but if memory serves I had read that newer version PS2 lasers, V5 and up, did not work in the earlier PS2s with crapped out laser. My brothers V1 finally stopped reading DVD after about a year. Switched his with a new on that I thought was goodand nothing. Tried azimuth and pot adjustment and could not get it to read dvd. Finally removed the chip to see if that was the problem and no difference. So finally said F it I'll try a V7 laser and low and behold reads dvd like a champ now. So was I wrong in thinking newer lasers don't work in old PS2s or is this a one in a million?

Also what I had always thought. If I had known it would work I would have given him a new laser a year ago because I knew this day would come. Now I have to re-install his chip for no reason.

400c lasers works on the older machines as far as I know.

To ihaveanosebleed
I think the only models that use R lasers are those with the R in the model number. The definative way to tell would be to look at the back of the laser. In my pic here in between the laser pots you can see "400C" the R type laser i am guessing would have a number followed by R. I think the mod to make an R type work in another console would be difficult because if I remember right they used a different cable.

That is a very easy mod. Basically crushes the old myth that newer laser will not work in old PS2s.
Do you know of any links for this mod for V1-V3 motherboards?

There’s some C types for sale on ebay for $44 from a place here in Canada, that’s the best price I’ve seen yet, most people try and sell these for $70 US or more. The info even says V1-8! I’m going to buy one and I’ll let you guys know how good it works. I’ve got a V4 here that barely reads original DVD’s now.
Hey, it looks like V9's use R type lasers too? I know they don’t seem to work too good! Last edited by ihaveanosebleed; 10-03-2004 at 04:17. |
