Hello wizards of this forum.
I have a V7 PAL PS2 with a Messiah 2 installed. Today I tried to play Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation 1 and it didn't recognize the Memory Card. The question is.... Can I save PS1 savegames on a PS2 Memory Card???? thanx |

As far as I know you can't use your PS2 memory to save PS1 games.
You must use a mamorycard for PS1 for PS1 games and a PS2 card for PS2 games.

You cannot use PS2 memory cards to save PS1 game saves on because, when PS1 was around, the memory cards were made up of blocks. These blocks of memory were effectively formatted like floppies where each sector came to so many KB's of RAM. The problem was that if a game save consisted of 35KB, and a sector was 30KB big for instance, then it would take up 2 blocks on the card, wasting 25KB on it and with PS1 cards only being 1MB big, they couldn't afford to waste blocks on cards and this is why you had to keep buying new cards every two minutes - VERY annoying
.PS2 memory cards use Flash ROM (techically RAM), and it is not divided up into blocks and sectors. This means that the above game save would only use up the actual 35KB on the card instead of the 60 we used in the example above. The file goes to the end of the cluster on the new PS2 Cards, which means that you can get a lot of game saves on one card, (that and the fact that they are 8 times bigger), and this is why your PS1 games are incompatible with PS2 cards because the format the game is saved in, is not the same as the format on the card. It's like trying to save a NES game on one, as mentioned above - it just wouldn't work. Hope this gives you a better idea on WHY it won't work... LUFCfan
